Meteora monasteries dress code
It is the most enforced rule at Meteora. Get it right at home before you travel — there are no shops between the parking and the gate.
Women
Skirt or dress past the knee + shoulders covered.
No trousers, no shorts, no sleeveless tops.
Men
Long trousers + shoulders covered.
No shorts, no sleeveless shirts.
For women — in detail
Wear
- Skirt or dress past the knee. Length is checked at the gate.
- Shoulders covered. Short sleeves are fine, sleeveless is not.
- A light cotton or linen long skirt with a short-sleeved shirt works perfectly in summer.
- A scarf or light shawl is a useful backup if you forget covered sleeves.
Avoid
- Trousers of any kind, including long trousers and jeans
- Shorts of any kind
- Sleeveless tops, spaghetti straps
- Skirts that ride up above the knee when you sit down
Four monasteries — Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Roussanou and St. Stephen — lend wrap-skirts at the entrance to women in trousers. Stock varies and queues form in peak season, so don’t rely on it.
For men — in detail
Wear
- Long trousers. Jeans, chinos, light linen — all fine.
- Shoulders covered. A regular t-shirt with sleeves works.
- Light linen trousers and a short-sleeved shirt is the summer combo locals wear.
Avoid
- Shorts of any length, including just-above-the-knee
- Sleeveless shirts, tank tops
Unlike for women, there are no loaner trousers for men anywhere. Show up in shorts and you will be turned away — no exceptions, even on the hottest summer days.
!
Day-trip travellers — pack accordingly
- If you arrive on a guided day trip in shorts, the bus does not wait for you to change. Bring the right clothes from your hotel.
- A pull-on wrap-skirt and a light cotton scarf weigh almost nothing in a daypack. If you’re unsure, bring them.
- The dress code applies inside every monastery. You don’t need it for the viewpoint stops between monasteries.
Frequently asked questions
-
What happens if I show up in shorts?
You will be turned away at the gate. There are no loaner trousers for men. The monasteries enforce this strictly — it is not negotiable, even on hot days.
-
Can women wear trousers?
No. Women must wear a skirt or dress that covers the knees. Four of the six monasteries (Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Roussanou and St. Stephen) lend wrap-skirts at the entrance for women in trousers — but you cannot count on availability.
-
What about children?
The rules apply to anyone old enough to walk in by themselves. Very small children are usually exempt in practice, but err on the side of covered shoulders and longer trousers/skirt.
-
Is it OK in the summer heat?
Yes — local visitors deal with this every summer. Light cotton or linen long trousers for men, a long cotton skirt and a light shawl for women. The interiors are stone and stay cool even in heat.
-
Sandals or hiking shoes?
Comfortable closed shoes are best. The climbs are up uneven stone stairways — sandals work, but you will be more comfortable in trainers.
