Monastery of the Holy Trinity

Agia Triada — the James Bond monastery

The Monastery of the Holy Trinity — Agia Triada — sits on what is arguably the most dramatic single rock in Meteora, with a vertical drop on every side. The town of Kalambaka spreads out far below; on a clear day you see the whole plain of Thessaly.

Hermits lived in caves at the foot of these rocks long before any monastery existed. The monastery itself was built across the 14th and 15th centuries, with the main building phase around 1475–1476 under the monk Dometius. Modern visitors will recognise the silhouette: it features as the cliff-top hideout in the 1981 James Bond film For Your Eyes Only.

Highlights

  • The katholikon dedicated to the Holy Trinity, with post-Byzantine frescoes
  • Some of the most far-reaching views in Meteora — straight down onto Kalambaka
  • Cinematic backstory: the climbing scenes of the 1981 Bond film For Your Eyes Only
